STOP INTOLERANCE TO LOVE: HONOUR KILLING

Lobbying is that act, which is done by the people to influence the decisions made by the government bodies. Many times, it is basically done to promote a particular cause.

The cause that I have taken is a social issues and the government body has tired its best to stop that cause but that cause is not still stopped in many parts of the country. The cause that I have taken is HONOUR KILLING. People in different parts of the country are still practicing this act whereas the government body has made various laws to stop it.

Honour Killing a traditional practice that is done by a single member of the family or by a group of family members to kill someone because he/she has brought shame on the family by marrying someone who does not belong to the same culture or the same religion. It is usually done when the victim and the partner are in a relationship that is not approved by the family or they have not followed the principles of religion that they should have followed. The women side of the family generally practices honor killing. In these days, it is mostly practiced in the villages in or near Haryana, Punjab or Rajasthan. Except from these places it is also practiced in many other parts of the country but mainly in the villages.

It is generally practiced when the girl and the guy marry each other that donot belong to the same gotra or outside one’s caste or marrying a cousin from a different caste. Honour Killing is completely different from dowry deaths, which is also very common in the country.

While going through the documents relating honour killing and while doing my research on honour killing there were few reasons why did the dirty act of honour killing be performed. The basic reasons for honor killing were:

  • Difference in the religion of the family to which the boy or the girl belong.
  • The family class that is that the guy belonged to a middle class family where as the girl belonged to high-class family.
  • Difference in the caste to which the guy and the girl belonged.
  • To save the tradition of the family.
  • For the self- respect of the family as well as the image that is created of the family from a long time.
  • To preserve the family honour.

The dirty act of honor killing is generally done in the small villages of Haryana or Punjab where there is no practice of the court of India and in places like that there is khap panchayat is which created. It is a body of people, which are selected by the people of that village only, and the khap panchayat usually donot follow any rules or regulations set by the government of India. They donot follow to any rules that have been mentioned in the constitution and the members of that khap panchayat generally make their own rules or regulations for governing that particular village. There is generally no police force also in those areas.

In some villages, when the marriage happens then they are against the wish of the family then, a few times the guy and the girl run to some other place/ town and they are never able to meet their parents again because they are aware of this fact that if they meet again then their life is in danger. Many a times the decision of the khap panchayat is that only that the two should more to some other place and should never return back here.

Earlier in Rajasthan, the practice of honour killing was practiced at a vast stage, but these days the government of Rajasthan has passed a law that the police have to keep a strict eye on the panchayat and the decisions they take. If the panchayat takes a decision that is against the law of the country then a serious action was taken against them. So because of this act of the government the dirty practice of honour killing is reduced.

These days in Punjab and Haryana, Protection Homes have been made, where the two can come and get married and they can stay there for 15 days in free and during those 15 days the family of both the guy and the girl is called and they are told that the two have got married and at the same time they are asked to sign a bond which stays that the girl and the guy have married with their own wish and hence no action can be taken against them.

Many a times, the family of the couple starts to blackmail the ngo’s or the protection home and ask them to make their children leave that place so that the family can kill the couple.

These are the few actions and steps that have been taken by the government of India to stop the dirty practice of honour killing.

After the government making different laws and regulations also, the practice of honour killing is yet going on in this country especially in the small towns and villages.

The organizations who have started to work against honour killing or who are helping those couples to settle down are:

  • United Nations (annual statistics on honour killing from across the world state, that one in five cases comes from India)
  • Love Commandos
  • Himmat Mahila Samooh (based in Rohtak, Haryana)

This NGO Himmat Mahila Samooh is and organization, which is set up to fight against the killing, committed against married and unmarried couples that are in love against their family wish.

There are various lobbying techniques that can be done to make the people aware of honour killing. The lobbying techniques that I have opted for is making a FACEBOOK page which is in the name of STOP INTOLERANCE TO LOVE.

The other techniques that could be opted for making the message to stop honour killing are:

  • Advertisements
  • Placing hoardings on the streets
  • Printing of t-shirts and distributing them for free in the villages with the message to stop honour killing
  • Performing street plays in the villages
  • One on one meetings
  • Facebook pages
  • Doing a documentary
  • Explaining them the after effect of honour killing that they are losing one of their own child and no one else.
  • Workshops

These days there are various films that have also come out to stop this act of honour killing. The honour killing inspired movie titled Khap-A Story of Honour Killing

Q1.  According to you, why being in love is considered as a punishable act. Should it result to killing?                                                                ANS. As per me, Love is pure, every human being needs love to survive in this world. And it can never be considered a punishable act. Though, love should also not cause any harm to other people.

Q2.  What all reactions do you get from the couples suffering from honour killing?
ANS. The couples suffering from honour killing always live in a fear. They are scared and confused and when no other path is visible to them; they often choose to run away. They live in guilt and then it leads to the chase of cathing them and it comes to an end when they are killed in the name of honour killing.

Q3. What all effects can be put in together for stopping the act of honour killing?                                                                                                 ANS. Laws are present but it is the need of the hour to enforce them. Also, there is need of change in the mindsets of people at the very grassroot level. More NGO’s should devote towards protecting the couples suffering from honour killing.

Q4. What all are the basic parameters on which the family generally disagree?                                                                                                                  ANS. I feel that the basic parameter of family disapproval is primarily based on the Caste System and religion.

Q5.  Have you ever come across a case in which the couple is still not accepted?                                                                                                               ANS. Yes, I have heard and read many such cases where even decade after the marriage of the couple, they are still not accepted by parents and society.

Q6. What is your viewpoint on honour killing?                                                                                                                                                                            ANS. Honour killing is totally unacceptable and it should be banned. It must be made a punishable offence in India. The khap Panchayats decision’s are treated as final verdict in the villages, which is against the constitution as only Supreme Court has the authority of giving final verdict. Killing of your own children in the name of honour is shameful. You may give birth to a child but it does not give you the right to take their lives back.

Q7. Thank you for your time, my last question is that what message would you like to spread across to the families who do such a crime and to the coming generation?                                                                                                                                                                                                       ANS. The coming generation must understand that awareness and education can only help to overcome such evils which are prevailing in the society. Girls should be given the right to birth and education. Gender discrimination must come to an end. And when the sex ratio will improve in India, the change will surely come in the mindsets of people.

Chungking Express

fig.1

(1994) is a Hong Kong drama written film, which has been directed by Wong Kar-wai. Here in this film Chungking Express, there are two stories that are been narrated to the audience. Both the films that are been narrated are about love. Except for love there is ne more thing common in them and that is the fast food restaurant, which is present in both the stories and has acted as a link in the two stories. In both the stories there is love that revolves around the policemen. Except for the restaurant and the love nothing in the film is common.

The cast of the first story is Takeshi Kaneshiro and Brigitte Lin. The story is about the cop (Takeshi Kaneshiro), who has just had a passionate break up in his relationship and is now days into depression. Because of his break up ha had started to drink a lot as well as he had started to consume a lot of expired food as he did not want to live any more. During his bad phase in life he then meets up a blonde female (Brigitte Lin), who had been consuming drugs in a bar. Further on in the film you he discovers that this blonde female was involved in some serious crime.

The cast of the second story is Tony Leung, Valerie Chow and Faye Wong. The second story is also about the unnamed cop (Tony Leung), who is generally referred as Cop 663. This cop 663 was in a relationship with a flight attendant (Valerie Chow). Here the new snack- bar girl Faye falls in love with this cop 663 and here the cop is not aware of it. One day when the cop is on his day off, then the flight attendant comes to the snack bar counter and waits for his but when he does not come there she hands over an envelope to the owner of the snacks bar counter and asks his to give it to the cop. They there in the snacks bar counter read the letter in the envelope, which is with a key of the cop’s apartment. On later reading the letter they find out that the letter is related to their breakup. Then Faye uses the pair of keys to clean up his apartment and also improve his way of living in his absence. Later on she decides to give the cop the letter but he keeps on delaying it. Then towards the end of the film when the cop comes to know that Faye is secretly in live with him, he plans for a date but Faye does not turn up. Then the story continues.

Both the stories that have been told to us have been wonderfully put together. The stories are shot in a unique style of music. The film is about their adventure. The editing done in the film is linear editing. The two situations in the film that are running parallel to each other are wonderfully put together and there is no confusion put in the minds of the audiences. The scenes shot in the film are very realistic. The editing in done is such a way that it sometimes show the past and present of some of the characters.

The story of the film revolves around the British tennis player Tony Wendice (Ray Miland), who secretly discovers his wealthy socialite wife Margot (Grace Kelly) is fooling around with some handsome American guy named Max (Robert Cumming), who is an American crime scriptwriter. Tony then plans for a murder of his wife Margot.

After getting to know about the affair of Margot, Tony starts to blackmail her one letter that Max use to send her through post as that were stolen from her purse at the station and the rest of the letters she had already burnt them. Max was there in town to meet Margot who was trying to convince Margot that Tony was not a nice guy and was trying to tell the truth about the relationship. At that time neither of the two Margot nor Max were aware that Tony knows about the relationship that Margot had with Max.

After Tony’s great tennis career Tony was left with no money and he had planned to take over the money that his wife had along with the shares that she had. Then Tony plotted a perfect murder plan of his with Margot along with Captain Lesgate, who later becomes the criminal.

For over a period of time say about a year or so, he collected some amount of money so that he could hire a contract murder to get his wife killed. Tony who was cunning as well as a brilliant planner had planned for a perfect murder. Tony and Captain Lesgate who were in the same school had come to know about the small secret crime that Lesgate had done, after knowing perfectly as to what Lesgate had done in his school days blackmailed Lesgate to murder his wife Margot.

Tony then sits with Lesgate in his house when Margot and Max are out for dinner and explains his perfect for the murder to Lesgate. According to his plan everything was going well as he had decided that the next night he would take Max out for dinner and then Lesgate would murder his wife Margot while Tony and Max would be put for dinner. Tony was all prepared that in this murder no one would suspect him for his wife’s murder as would be out for a dinner with Max.

According to the plan the murder was supposed to take place at 11 pm when Tony would call at the landline and Margot would come from the bedroom to pick the telephone and at that time Lesgate would murder her with the scarf. When they are out for dinner Tony makes the call but a bit later and then Margot comes from the bedroom to pick the call up and then she is attacked by Lesgate who had been hiding behind the certain from a long time. But the Margot falls on to the table where a pair of scissors comes in her hands and she attacks Lesgate and he dies on the spot.

Later in the movie Margot is blamed for Lesgate’s murder and is put behind the bars. Later during the police investigation Max finds the contract money in the bedroom of Tony and then he gives it to the police. After a lot of suspense and mystery it is found out that Lesgate had come to murder Margot and Tony was the real culprit   and the mastermind behind this whole murder story.

The production design of this film is perfect as it very well narrates the audience the play and at the same time that script of the play Dial M For Murder is also very well written and both the film a s well as the play explains the murder mystery very well. I think that there is no gap in the set of the film as well as the play. The set of the film as well of the play is designed very well and I think that this set was very much perfect for a mystery play.

Eternal Sunshine of Spotless Mind

fig.1

(2004), is a science fiction based romantic comedy drama film, which is about a separated couple who have erased each other and the memories from their mind. The film is written by Charlie Kaufman and is directed by Michel Gondry. The film uses various elements of story telling like non-linear to discover the nature of memory and love. The cast of the movie includes Jim Carrey, Kate Winslet, Kirsten Dunst, Mark Ruffalo, Elijah Wood and Tom Wilkinson.

The film is basically around the relationship between Joel Barish (Jim Carrey) and Clementine Krucynski (Kate Winslet). Major part of the film revolves around the memory of Joel. Joel who is a self controlled guy where as Clem is a free falling girl with great power of living her life the way she wants to. Suddenly one fine day Clem gets annoyed with Joel and decides to erase her memory and get separated. Clem undergoes the process of getting the memory erased for a long period of time and once she was done, she was quite sure that she would never turn back and go to him. Once Clem does it and Joel seeing her careless behavior towards him, he also decides to do the same that is erase the memory of Clem from his mind.

The whole story revolves around how Joel tries to erase Clem out of his memory but through this process he finds outs that how deeply was he in love with her and how difficult is it for him to get Clem out from his mind as well as from his heart.

CRITICAL ANALYSIS:

Eternal Sunshine of Spotless Mind is that film that is said to be that kind story of a couple that would never come across each other. It is a film that have a lot of flash backs and at the same time is a non-linear narrative film. Here in this movie there is a lot of editing done. This film does not have a usual editing pattern. Here editing plays a very important role as this movie has a lot of past and present mixture flash backs, which play a very important role is the story telling process. That is what makes this movie different from the other movies.

The story is a continuous mixture of Joel’s and Clem’s past and present. In many of the parts of the film Joel is remembering the best time spend with Clem in the starting of the their relationship while undergoing the treatment and at the same time it is shown the unreal treatment done by the doctors to erase one’s memory good or bad.

The confusion in the film about the past and present makes it a unique way on its own and I think that this only makes the audience watch the film till the end. Here editing plays a very important role as it puts different parts of the story together from the past to the present.

This film also talks about the true love that this couple had for each other that even after erasing their memories, when they turn back to the point where they had left each other and got their memories erased, they fall in love all over again, even after knowing what they had spoken about each other while they were undergoing the treatment of memory erasing.

Through this film I think that one can understand that love is about the heart and not the mind. Her in this movie even after getting the memory erased from the two’s mind they again fall in love with each other so this can easily tell us about how much were they deeply in love and that true love is not done from the mind but it is felt through the hearts.

Come September

                                                                                      fig.1

Come September (1961), is a romantic comedy film, which has been directed by Robert Mulligan. The cast of the film is Rock Hudson, Gina Lollobrigida, Bobby Darin and Sandra Dee.

The film is about a rich American businessman Robert Talbot (Rock Hudson), who is the owner of a cottage on the coast of Ligurian (a beautiful landscape of Italy) and there he stays with his Italian lover Lisa Fellini (Gina Lollobrigida), who spend every September there.

Once he decides to visit his villa in the month of July instead of September and calls his lover to join him. When Robert arrives at the villa in the month of July he finds out that his villa is converted into a full time hotel named La Dolce Vista. On his arrival he finds out that Maurice Clavell (Walter Slezak), who use to take care of the villa was running a hotel in his absence from the last six years and sees her hosting a group of girls.

This is how the film starts and it further goes on with the guests staying in the hotel and Robert trying to get them out of his villa at the earliest. Robert who had come with his Italian girlfriend Lisa to spend some quality time with each other cannot manage to get the guest out of the villa but they themselves land into doing the things that Margaret Allision do along with the group of girls and the street teenage boys.

There are amazing twists that come in between the film that bring a new change in the story of the film, which leaves the whole of the audience with laughter in the film.

The first twist that comes in the film is when Robert the owner of the villa at the coast of Ligurian reaches in the month of July instead of September with his Italian girlfriend and finds out that his villa is converted into a hotel in his absence. Then he asks Margaret to get the girls out of the hotel but is not successful. Later next morning, Margaret slips on a cork and is hospitalized and then again he is not able to get the girls out of the villa and then all his dreams of spending quality time with Lisa are shattered.

The story again takes a twist when the police caught Robert and then they asked Maurice to explain Robert’s identity but then he misunderstood the entire story and made him into a criminal in front of the Italian police even when Robert did not fire him but instead singed a deed to make him find another job in case he was fired.

The other twist comes when Tony (Bobby Darin), who is one of the proud medical freshmen, apologizes to Robert before leaving the villa. Robert after hearing his conversation then plans on his relationship with Lisa, which then becomes successfully, which further results to marriage.

Come September has a lot of twists and turns, which add humor in the film and the film is full of laughter and is a vey nice romantic comedy with a normal love story with twists and turns. The director and the actors very beautifully perform the story of the film Come September.

The production design of the film is magnificent as well as the setting of each and every scene makes the film come alive to the audience. The editing is also very well done.
